Deadlock 2 Should Avocato Have Raised Little Cato?Welcome to the 2nd edition of Deadlock, where I ramble about an opinion I'm either in the middle on or see both sides of the argument. Today's topic, Final Space spoilers BTW, Should Avocato have raised Little Cato? For non Final Space fans, this is your last chance to back out because frankly, this is the #1 best plot twist I've ever seen. And I've seen Sixth Sense and read 1984, but let's focus.I know what non Final Space fans are thinking; why shouldn't a father (even the villain Avocato used to be) raise his own child?,So in episode 3 of 13 in season 3, we get a mega reveal about Avocato's backstory, how he teamed up with the Lord Commander during a war for power. but there's more.... Avocato was ordered to kill the king and queen of Ventrexia......He shot them out of the sky from their ship, killed them, and found their baby alive in the rubble. Remorseful that he murdered the baby boy's parents, he vowed to make amends by raising him with all the love in the world.....That's right, Avocato adopted Little Cato after murdering his parents. To this day, my mind is blown, truth be told, there are so many layers of potential with this twist, it creates an extra layer of intrigue to this father son idealization dynamic, especially because we the audience find out in episode 3, Little Cato is told the truth in the finale. You can imagine how THAT went, but let's get into the discussion now that we've established the context. So, the twist is insane, we can all agree, but one of my favorite elements is the moral grayness it especially established towards the climax of season 3. Avocato wanted to make amends for something unfixable, taking the lives of LC's parents, but even the show is very aware, as Gary states, "your crime wasn't killing his parents, your crime was getting into that kid's heart." Little Cato truly does or did idolize Avocato, and why shouldn't he? This guy has died to save him, put everything into raising him, and protecting his well being as best he could. Which probably made the whole reveal worse for Little Cato, because now the person he loves most the one who hurt him the most. As great a parent as Avocato was, it creates a deep decision for LC that sadly will never be explored upon the show's cancelation. I will say the reason I love this twist so much is as follows. Not only does it justify Avocato's resurrection which is usually a BS cop out, but it created a subplot so strong that the Catos could hold a show all on their own. You can have a trial on Ventrexia, you can have so much emotion, you can have Little Cato adapting to the changes from rebel to royal as he takes his place on the throne. Anyway, back to Avocato, we can all agree he had good intentions out of remorse but with a messed up execution. In all honesty, he is an incredible father, but does he have the right to be? It's stated in passing he had a son BEFORE getting involved with the Lord Commander. Thus wanting a new child to mask that great pain of losing that previous son. There is one more point I'd like to make. This line in the climax of the finale. From Avocato. "Being your father is all I ever want to be."Disclaimer I love Avocato, he has well earned his fan favorite character title, but this is one of those lines that sounds noble and heroic but isn't in context. Well, okay, it might be, but it raises a serious question due to the complexity of the situation. Does he have the right to so much as try to be LC's dad from now on?Again, the show got canceled, we'll never know what he decides, adapt or abandon Avocato. But I love when writers create situations like this; ones where there's so much to it where I don't know how I would react myself. If the person who loved me most did something this bad to me in my past, working so hard to make amends ever since, are they worth it? You guys tell me? Is Avocato worth the effort? Or were you more so on Ash's betraying side. Because long story short, she's a whole other story. Her admittedly childish overreaction deserved SOME reaction. She's not wrong for thinking Avocato might be evil, even if he's not, for doing something so insane. So again, you Final Space fans tell me, should Avocato have raised Little Cato? He could've dropped him on a doorstep alla Harry Potter. I GET the mindset but I don't know what he should've done to truly fix this. What do you think? More Deadlocks coming soon. ;)
